Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world and in the United States.

  • Globally: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide.
  • In the U.S.: Cancer is also the second leading cause of death, just behind heart disease.

The numbers are stark, globally, in the US, and especially in Florida.  More than 110,000 new cases are diagnosed here each year. Despite incredible progress in treating certain cancers like prostate and thyroid, many others remain incredibly difficult to fight. Cancers of the pancreas, liver, lung, and brain, along with myeloma and leukemia, still have devastatingly high rates of morbidity and mortality.

The FLorida CAncer RESearch (FL CARES) Network is a collaboration of six leading Florida cancer research institutions. We are expanding the Sylvester Data Portal, infrastructure developed at the University of Miami, into the new Florida Platform for Accelerating Collaborative Computational Cancer Research (PAC3R), pronounced “PACER.” This new platform allows organizations in our network to access data and collaborate effectively.
